SMX is brewed under the direction of renowned brewmaster Alan Pugsley. Alan graduated from the University of Manchester in 1982 with a degree in biochemistry. He started his career at the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England, working under the mentorship of legendary brewer Peter Austin. Alan later moved to the United States, where he played a leading role in the development of the craft beer industry, both locally and internationally. He co-founded Shipyards Brewing Company and has helped establish over 80 breweries in North America. Alan's deep experience with traditional English ales and modern brewing techniques is uniquely evident in SMX beer.
St. Mary Axe was a former medieval church in the old city of London, England. The original name of the church was St. Mary, St. Ursula And Her 11,000 Virgins - but that's a whole other story! The name St. Mary Axe survives today as the street the church formerly occupied and is known for its modern architecture. St. Mary Axe typifies the dichotomy of our beer - of old and new, traditional and modern.
SMX was founded by Steve Dobronyi and Christine Haselmayer in Toronto, Canada. We are 100% Canadian independently owned and operated. Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter at @smxbeer.
